CE-34335-8 — PS4 Error CE-34335-8: What It Means & How to Fix It

The PS4 can’t find its hard drive at all — “no Hard Disk Drive detected,” usually a loose, missing, or dead drive.

Possible hardware fault Last reviewed June 13, 2026

What this error means

CE-34335-8 means “no Hard Disk Drive detected in your PlayStation 4 console.” On boot the PS4 couldn’t see a usable internal drive. Either the drive has come loose, the drive has failed, or (after a swap) it isn’t seated correctly or hasn’t had system software installed yet.

Most likely causes

Cause How likely Fixable at home?
Hard drive loose in its bay Very likely Yes — reseat it
Newly swapped drive without system software Likely Yes — reinstall from USB
Hard drive has failed Possible Yes — replace it
Damaged drive caddy or connector Rare Sometimes — service

How to fix it

Ordered easiest-first. Try the next step only if the error comes back.

  1. Reseat the hard drive

Power off and unplug. Slide off the HDD bay cover, remove the caddy, and firmly reseat the drive into its connector before sliding it back in.

⚠ Opening the user-accessible HDD bay is allowed and doesn’t void the warranty, but unplug the console first and handle the caddy gently.

  2. Check the drive is fully pushed home

A drive that’s a millimetre short of its connector reads as absent. Make sure it clicks fully into place and the caddy screw is snug.

  3. Reinstall system software (new or wiped drive)

If the drive is new or was erased, the PS4 sees “no software.” Use Safe Mode > Reinstall System Software with the official full reinstall file on a FAT32/exFAT USB stick at PS4/UPDATE/PS4UPDATE.PUP.

  4. Test with another known-good drive

If a healthy spare 2.5" SATA drive is detected and the original isn’t, the original drive has failed and needs replacing.

When it's not your fault

Signs the problem is on Sony's side — or in the hardware — rather than anything you can change:

  • The console was working, then was moved or knocked, and the drive popped loose.
  • The drive is brand new — “not detected” just means it needs system software installed.
  • A second known-good drive is detected immediately, pointing at a dead original.
When to contact Sony: If a correctly-seated, known-good drive still isn’t detected, the caddy connector or mainboard may be at fault — contact PlayStation Repairs. Check the official PS4 server status page first, then reach Sony support if the error persists.

FAQ

I just replaced the drive — why “not detected”?

A blank drive has no system software, so the PS4 reports it as unusable. Reinstall the full system software from USB in Safe Mode and it will be recognised.

Which drives fit a PS4?

A standard 2.5" SATA hard drive or SSD up to 9.5 mm thick. Reinstall system software after fitting it.

Did I lose my data?

If the original drive failed, data on it may be unrecoverable without specialist help — which is why PS Plus cloud or USB save backups matter. A reseat, by contrast, loses nothing.
