How to fix it

Ordered easiest-first. Try the next step only if the error comes back.

  1. Power-cycle the console

    Hold the Xbox button on the console for 10 seconds until it powers off, then turn it back on. A clean boot occasionally clears a stalled update.

  2. Run the Offline System Update (OSU)

    On a PC, download the Offline System Update file from Xbox Support onto a FAT32 USB drive (folder $SystemUpdate), then boot the console into the Startup Troubleshooter and choose “Offline system update”.

  3. Use the Startup Troubleshooter to restart

    If you reach the troubleshooter, try “Restart this Xbox” first — it’s non-destructive and sometimes lets the update finish.
